  • UCL Union's MODO Fashion society is set to host its sixth annual fashion show on 28 February in the prestigious Hotel Russell, WC1.

The Green Fashion Show will start at 7pm, with an exhibition opening at 6:30pm.

This year, the MODO fashion show is going 'Green', in support of UCL and UCL Union joining the 10:10 campaign, which aims to cut carbon emissions by 10% in 2010.

MODO designers are creating garments for this year's show with a view to using ethically and sustainably sourced fabrics, renewing old ones or recycling other unwanted materials. Students have employed a vast range of materials, from dated yellow curtains to unwanted crisp packets, to produce innovative and stylish garments that can be worn with pride by the 40 UCL student models taking to the catwalk this year.

The exhibition of designers' work will this year be supported by various green charities and representatives, including Traid, 10:10, Greenpeace, OffHand, Stop Climate Chaos, New Internationalist, OXFAM and Friends of the Earth. MODO will also be featuring their Bootsale, which is usually held on campus every month for charity.

MODO will also be raising money for the Disasters Emergency Committee's Haiti Earthquake appeal by bucket collection, so please bring along donations.

Tickets are £7 and include a free drink, as well as other goodies. In keeping with the 'Green' theme, tickets are only available online: go to the UCL Union shop website and search for 'MODO'. Seated tickets are available on request by emailing Sophie Constantinou.

In keeping with this year's Green Fashion Show theme, MODO have also been active in supporting UCLU People and Planet's Go Green Week campaign, which took place in early February. A free Green Sewing Workshop taught students how to recycle fabrics for craft projects, and to tailor and customise old garments to create something fresh. The MODO bootsale was also held at the Day in the Quad. Watch the MODO section of the Go Green Week film on UCL's YouTube channel at 1 min 06.

    UCL context

MODO fashion society was founded in 2004, and has grown to become one of the most active art societies in the UCL Union. MODO provides weekly sewing, art and make-up classes for beginners, encouraging participation from students of all disciplines. Ongoing photoshoot workshops take place monthly, to give models, make-up artists, photographers, stylists and designers industry-style experience.

This year, the society has additionally held a series of tailored pattern-cutting classes, and some one-off classes teaching theatre make-up and knitting and crochet to beginners. The famous stylist and designer Johnnyblueeyes also gave a fascinating lecture which, as well as being thoroughly entertaining, also gave the audience an insight into the creative process and the fashion industry.

In addition to maintaining its close relationship with UCLU Stage Crew and UCLU Photo Society, MODO have this year participated in UCLU Afro-Caribbean Society and UCLU Bongos?! Shows. MODO designers have also donated their carefully crafted items from previous shows to UCLU Sri Lankan Society to showcase in their annual event. MODO seamstresses have created costumes for UCLU Drama society's Dr Faustus, with MODO make-up artists completing the team.
