Alumni Professional Networking Event November 2009 ucl.ac.uk/alumni" target="_self">UCL Alumni Relations

Over 90 recent UCL graduates attended an alumni professional networking event on 11 November, focusing on architecture, planning, construction and project management.

The event, the second in the professional networking series organised by UCL Alumni Relations, was designed to connect experienced alumni with recent graduates, and to provide information on career change, or how to break into an industry sector.

Dean of The Bartlett School of Architecture, Professor Alan Penn, chaired the discussion and was joined on the panel by:

  • Narinder Sagoo (UCL Bartlett 1998), Partner, Foster & Partners
  • Agnieska Glowacka (UCL Bartlett 2001) Co Founder Glowacka Rennie Architects
  • Simon Rawlinson (UCL Geography 1985) Partner & Head of Research, Davis Langdon LLP
  • Mary Duggan (UCL UCL Bartlett 1997), Partner, Duggan Morris
  • Delwar Hossain (UCL Bartlett 1992), Managing Director, Adrem
  • Akintunde Banjoko OBE (UCL Bartlett 2003, Founder & Chief Executive, LEAP

Each panellist drew on their own career journey to provide the audience with a taste of their respective careers and to impart practical advice on entering the industry.

Their words of wisdom included:

"Experiment - you never know where it will lead...I decided to bike around my portfolio of ideas to potential clients. The work inside was nothing great but the packaging was immaculate. I got four offers of work where others got nothing. It's about the effort you put in." Delwar Hossain

"Bring your own ideas to the table - challenge orthodoxy, and if you can show how you can provide a solution to an existing problem that will make you very valuable to an employer." Simon Rawlinson

"Keep trying new things. As Norman Foster says, "the only constant is change." Narinder Sagoo
