  • The UCL Graduate School is offering bursaries to attend the 2009 Times Cheltenham Science Festival.

UCL research and taught degree postgraduate students are eligible for the bursaries, worth £550 each, which cover travel, accommodation and festival tickets. The UCL Graduate School will fund ten graduate students to go to the festival and attend up to six events per day for five days.

The Times Cheltenham Science Festival co-directed by Dr Mark Lythgoe (UCL Centre for Advanced Biomedical Imaging) has a reputation for getting the best brains in the country together to probe the most topical issues, and this year it's better than ever. It provides an opportunity to explore ideas that make the world go round, debate the hottest topics, and put your questions to some of the world's leading thinkers and personalities.

A huge variety of topics will be covered: from sustainability, cutting edge surgery and Darwin to the pleasure of cars, drumming and whether science can make you happy. The festival provides a unique opportunity to debate, ask questions and hear the most current thinking from the experts, first hand.

This year the theme, inspired by a multitude of anniversaries, is Heresy. Science often encourages controversy and challenges conventional ways of thinking, and this year's theme finds threads throughout the programme.

To take advantage of this opportunity, write 250 words on what you think about public engagement in science and whether it is important and send it to your Departmental Graduate Tutor. Each department will be asked to recommend one student to the Graduate School who will then select the bursary winners.

The closing date for the applications is 24 April 2009. The successful candidates will be sent a full festival brochure and more details on how to claim their tickets.
