Slade student wins 'School of Saatchi'

UCL Slade School of Fine Art student Eugenie Scrase has been named winner of BBC Two's School of Saatchi programme.

Eugenie was selected from six finalists on the strength of her work Truncated Trunk of a tree trunk impaled on a length of fence. The prize she has won is the opportunity to exhibit in Charles Saatchi's international exhibition Newspeak and the use of a studio for three years.

Eugenie called the outcome "mind-blowing" and thanked Saatchi for providing the opportunity. Truncated Trunk has been on show at the Hermitage in St Petersburg, Russia, since October 2009.

Eugenie had her moment of inspiration when she happened to walk past the log in East London, and asked the local council if she could remove the section of fence it was impaled upon to install in the Saatchi Gallery for the finale of the series - an exhibition featuring work by all six finalists.

Artist and member of the judging panel Tracey Emin commended Eugenie's thought process and confidence: "Some artists could see that, but they'd never have the confidence to go ahead and do it."
