The main roles of IHEST are to help remedy the lack of public understanding of science, and bring science and society closer together. IHEST provides training and leads public debate on scientific issues and the public perception of them, and aims to build up a pool of key figures devoted to exchanging ideas on science and technology and participating in their governance.

IHEST is under the authority of the French Ministry of Higher Education & Research and was created within the National Pact for Research (2006) which aims to restructure French research and give it new impetus.

The delegation, which was led by Madame Chevallier-Le Guyader, Director of IHEST, was welcomed by Professor David Price, UCL Vice-Provost (Research) and heard presentations from Professor Peter Coffey (UCL Institute of Ophthalmology), Professor Steven Miller (UCL Science & Technology Studies) and Professor Nick Tyler (UCL Civil, Environmental & Geomatic Engineering) about aspects of their research and its relevance to society.
