  • A new mental health research unit has been launched in Chennai, India, by Dr Sushrut Jadhav (UCL Centre for Behavioural & Social Sciences in Medicine).

The Banyan Academy of Leadership in Mental Health (BALM) is a non-governmental organisation that offers training for mental health professionals. They invited Dr Jadhav to help them develop new courses and approaches to mental health and, with seed-funding from the UCL International Office, a collaboration was established between BALM and UCL. The first short course run at the BALM centre, entitled 'Mental Health at the Margins', was held in April this year with great success. A follow-up course is due to begin in November.

The new research unit aims to bring Dr Jadhav's expertise to bear in seeking innovative solutions for tackling mental healthcare reform in India. His background in anthropology, and experience in cross-cultural mental health work, will inform important work at the unit.
