  • Students from Spain, Portugal and five Latin American countries have received scholarships from Abbey National plc, part of the Santander Group, to pursue postgraduate study at UCL and other leading London institutions.

The scholarships are part of the Santander Universities scheme, through which Banco Santander supports higher education. Currently 625 universities make up the network the bank supports.

At a ceremony last week, 25 Ibero-American students received awards from Abbey Chief Executive, António Horta-Osório, who said: "I'm delighted to give these young people the opportunity to pursue their studies in world class institutions and to welcome them to London, one of the world's most vibrant and exciting cities. At Santander, we believe education, international cooperation and the exchange of knowledge between cultures and nationalities are the most powerful means of promoting the development and prosperity of society. We are sure today's scholarships are the start of a long and beneficial relationship for London's students."

Professor Michael Worton, Vice-Provost of UCL (Academic & International) said: "UCL is delighted to be working with Abbey Santander on a variety of scholarships and programmes to encourage Ibero-American students to come to UCL and for UCL students to study and research in Latin America and the Iberian Peninsula. Already we are seeing very real fruits from Abbey Santander's generosity and vision."

Abbey currently funds a number of scholarships at UCL, including ten UCL Abbey Master's Scholarships and ten Abbey "1-UCL" Excellence/Endeavour Awards. The latter reward outstanding achievement or endeavour by current UCL students in a non-academic field relating to UCL as a community. Activities might be in areas such as sport, music, theatre, fundraising, volunteering or mentoring. Nominations by staff and students of deserving current UCL students will be accepted until 1 May 2008.
