UCL Mathematician awarded Austrian Cross

Professor David Larman, Head of UCL Mathematics, has been awarded the Austrian Academy of Sciences Cross of Honour for Science and Art, First Class.

The Austrian Ambassador presented the cross, on behalf of the President of Austria, during a reception at the Austrian Embassy in Belgrave Square on Friday 5th May.

The Austrian Cross for Arts and Sciences is the highest award for research in Austria. The recipient is determined by a vote of Austrians who have formerly held the Austrian Cross. It is comparable with an award from the Royal Society or the British Academy in the UK.

Professor Larman, whose research interests include geometry, analysis and combinatorics, said: "I am delighted and surprised to receive this award, particularly in view of the excellence of those researchers who voted for me. My one sadness is that my mentor and predecessor Professor CA Rogers died last December. He would have particularly enjoyed this honour since he maintained a friendly rivalry throughout his career with the great Austrian mathematicians Edmund Hlawka and Wolfgang Schmidt."
