The end of the world?

25 October 2005

This year's Natural History Museum Annual Science Lecture will be presented by Professor Bill McGuire (Benfield Hazard Research Centre).

Professor Bill McGuire 'Global Catastrophes, a Punters Guide' will ponder the threat of volcanic super-eruptions; the implications of a mega-tsunami; and the outcome of a cataclysmic earthquake before ultimately asking: is the human race really doomed?

The lecture will draw on Professor McGuire's recent book 'Surviving Armageddon: Solutions for a Threatened Planet' which outlined both long and short-term strategies to help limit the damage caused by future large-scale natural hazards.

Professor McGuire said: "The fragility of our planet and our species has never before been so apparent. On Boxing Day 2004 we surfaced bleary-eyed from festive celebrations to the first news of one of the greatest natural catastrophes of modern times - the Indian Ocean tsunami - and wondered why we were caught by surprise. This lecture will help allay - at least partly - our fears about future global natural catastrophes"
