Gold medal for UCL medical student

16 June 2005

Three UCL medical students were recognised on 24 June 2005 as the overall best graduating medical students in the University of London.

Etienne Wang (Medical School 2005) won the University of London Gold Medal for Medicine. As runner-up, Syed Sohaib (Medical School 2005) won the Beutel Prize, while Melanie Spooner (Medical School 2005) placed third.

Based on the results of their final examinations - which are taken each year by approximately 1,500 students - 19 candidates were nominated by their medical schools.

They sat a special medal examination at the University of London, being interviewed by examiners on pathology, medicine, obstetrics and gynaecology, clinical pharmacology and therapeutics, surgery and paediatrics. The criteria examined were knowledge, therapeutic relevance and evidence-base; judgement and reasoning, social and community, context and relevance, clinical context and recent advances.
