Slade oils catalogued

6 April 2005

A new publication by the Public Catalogue Foundation details the oil paintings at UCL that are in public ownership.

Dr Emma Chambers 'Oil Paintings in London: The Slade and UCL' is a fully illustrated book that details all the oil paintings held in UCL's Slade Collections and displayed around the UCL campus. Many of the artists are Slade alumni who went on to become leading figures in the art world.

Curator of the Slade Collections, Dr Emma Chambers, said: "The Slade School of Fine Art has attracted many of the leading names in British art since its foundation in 1871. For the first time in history, this catalogue enables the public to see all the oil paintings in the Slade Collections at UCL as well as those in various departments. It features early treasures by artists including David Bomberg, Dora Carrington, Paula Rego and Stanley Spencer among others."

The Public Catalogue Foundation has been established to record the nation's entire collection of oil paintings in public ownership and to make them accessible by compiling a series of catalogues. On completion, the series will feature a colour illustration and description of every oil painting in the UK's national collection. The revenue from sales of the catalogue will be used for the restoration and conservation of oil paintings in their care.

Highlights from the collection will feature in a special exhibition at Christie's, 8 King Street, London SW1Y 6QT on 4 and 5 May 2005.
