UCL Union elects sabbatical team 2003/2004
29 April 2003
Following some fierce campaigning UCL students have elected a team of six sabbatical officers to run their union for the forthcoming academic year.
The six officers, each assigned their own area of responsibility, will govern the Union equally for one year. Along with part-time officers, hall and department representatives, they make up Union Council, UCL Union's policy and decision making body.
Taking on the role of Clubs, Societies & Student Development Officer is Alex Lal (Ancient History & Archaeology 3). Alex will be responsible for the more than 100 Union clubs and societies, plus general non-academic development projects such as the annual Skills for Work Conference, in association with UCL Careers Service.
As Education & Welfare Officer, Alex Coles (Dutch & German 1) will organise the Union's awareness weeks and campaigning efforts as well as ensuring students have access to support outside their department. Alex is keen to see more student involvement with and understanding of the Union.
Sinan Rabee (Chemical Engineering 3) will oversee elections and the allocation of funding in his capacity as Finance & Administration Officer. He will manage the assets and infrastructure of the Union but also aims to help students at UCL get the most out of the facilities provided.
Media & Communications Officer elect Andreas von Maltzahn (Economics 3) will take over the Union's publicity and external relations. Critical of students' apathy, Andreas hopes to encourage greater involvement through improved and increased communication. Amy Hansen (Archaeology 2) will represent medical students, postgraduates and students based outside of the main UCL campus in her role as Medical Students' & Sites Officer.
The Services & Events Officer provides a programme of entertainment for
students and oversees the Union's bars, catering outlets, shops and gym.
Alastair Boyle (Philosophy 3) will take over the job, and hopes to encourage
UCL musicians, DJs and performers to develop their skills at Union events.
