Carla Perez Martinez is a UKRI Future Leaders Fellow at the London Centre for Nanotechnology at University College London. Carla obtained her BS, MS and PhD degrees from MIT in 2011, 2013 and 2016, respectively. For her undergraduate and graduate research, Carla worked with Prof Paulo Lozano in the MIT Space Propulsion Lab, developing ionic liquid ion sources. After her PhD, she moved to the UK to take up a postdoctoral position in the group of Prof Susan Perkin in the Physical and Theoretical Chemistry Laboratory at the University of Oxford, where she was also appointed Junior Research Fellow at Trinity College. At Oxford, Carla studied ionic liquids and electrolytes under nanoconfinement, in particular, the response of these substances when subjected to electric fields. In January 2020, Carla moved to the London Centre for Nanotechnology with funding from UKRI to set up her own group, to develop new nanomanufacturing technologies based on ionic liquid ion sources.

 

 

 

Postdoctoral Research Fellow

Dr Aydin Sabouri received his PhD degree from the Micro Engineering and Nanotechnology Centre at the University of Birmingham in 2015. His doctoral work was on development of a novel detector for measuring the beam and its halo in focused ion beam systems. He also investigated the ion-solid interactions and the effect of ion implantation on substrates.

Following his PhD, he has been working as a research fellow at the same university and has been researching novel micro and nano manufacturing processes for NEMS and optical devices. He was a recipient of an EPSRC award (£59k), titled “Innovative Manufacturing in Laser-based Production Processes,” to develop a biosensor for the rapid detection of proteins for healthcare applications. Following this, he has worked on the design, fabrication and characterization of novel bio-membranes for use in spectroscopic interrogation of lipid bilayers and monitoring of trans-membrane processes. He was also the manager of the cleanroom facility and supervised micro and nanofabrication research.

Aydin’s postdoctoral work will develop a new focused ion beam system based on ionic liquids.

 

 

Doctoral Students

 Alexander Storey is a third-year PhD student at the London Centre for Nanotechnology at University College London. He received his MSci in Chemistry from UCL in 2019. His Masters dissertation involved simulation of ion-atom collisions in the femtosecond resolution, in an attempt to describe an unexplained behaviour previously observed experimentally during the collision of certain states of Ar2+ and He. In September 2021, Alex joined the Ionic Liquids for Nanomanufacturing research group as part of UCL Physics, where his work will involve the design, simulation, construction and implementation of a Wien filter as a means to separate different ion species in ILIS technology. His research will also involve the irradiation of various substrates using ILIS and evaluating their effectiveness compared to existing techniques

 

 

Shaun is a first-year PhD student in the Centre for Doctoral Training of Advanced Characterisation of Materials. Shaun's project involves using Atom Probe Tomography to study ion implantation caused by Ionic Liquid Ion Sources. Shaun did his 4th-year MSci Theoretical Physics project with our group whilst an undergraduate student at University College London. Shaun has a passion for nanotechnology and material science and enjoys utilising his computational skills to solve problems. His master's project involved using COMSOL to Optimise ion source arrays for materials processing.

 

 

 

 

 

 

Alumni

	Yanru (Leo) Lu did his MSc project in Physics with us over 2021-2022. His master's project focused on optimising Ionic Liquid Ion Source arrays for materials processing using COMSOL Multiphysics software.
	Rania Shafiq joined us for a summer research internship in 2022 at the LCN where her project focused on designing a vacuum-compatible motorized translation stage.
	Sufia Hashim received an MSci in Physics from University College London. She was a summer student in 2021 at the laboratory, where she helped with designing the needle mount
	Usama Ahmed obtained an MSci in Natural Sciences majoring in Condensed Matter Physics at University College London. Usama did his fourth-year project in our laboratory and worked with us over the summer following the end of his course (2020-2021).
