  1. John Deas Thomson born in Edinburgh; married to Rebecca Freer, the daughter of a South Carolina planter. Among their children was Sir Edward Deas Thomson (1800–1879), administrator and politician in Australia.

  2. John was a Commissioner and Accountant-General of the Navy and formerly Naval Store-keeper at the Cape. He was knighted 24 August 1832 (becoming a KCH [Knight Commander of the Royal Guelphic Order, also known as the Hanoverian Guelphic Order]). He was also a Fellow of the Linnean Society of London and a Fellow of the Royal Society.
