Biography

Receiver in a colonial court case into which the compensation for the Lethe estate in St James was paid, and probably the same man as the Samuel Anderson awarded the compensation under St James nos. 622 and 623. A Sam. Anderson was shown as the US Vice-Consul at Montego Bay in the Jamaica Almanac for 1839.

  1. Samuel Anderson was born 04/04/1795 and baptised 04/07/1795 in St James, Jamaica, son of Dr. John Anderson and his wife Elizabeth. He married Anna Rebecca Ruthven 20/12/1827 in Belmont, Trelawney, Jamaica. They had three children, all baptised in Jamaica: Samuel Ruthven (baptised 06/04/1829), Anna Virgo (baptised 13/03/1832) and Mary Sydney (baptism unknown, according to the 1881 census she was born in Montego Bay, Jamaica c. 1836).

  2. Venn's Alumni Cantabrigienses gives Samuel Ruthven Anderson as son of Samuel Anderson of Bonn, Germany, but the reasons for this are unclear. Samuel Ruthven attended Winchester School and then Trinity College, Cambridge.

  3. Not found in Britain in the censuses of 1841, 1851 or 1861, he died at 33 Montpelier Road, Brighton, 25/04/1864. His will was proved by his executors Anna Rebecca Anderson (33 Montpelier Road, widow), Anna Virgo Anderson and Mary Sydney Anderson (daughters, both of 33 Montpelier Road, spinsters) and Rev. Samuel Ruthven Anderson (son, of Hounslow, Middlesex), effects under £6000.

  4. John Anderson had two half-sisters and a half-brother. Robert Sinclair and Sidney Mary, children of John and Beatrice Anderson, were baptised in St James, Jamaica, 14/12/1780. Elizabeth, daughter of John and Beatrice Anderson, was baptised in St James 09/11/1776. Sidney (or Sydney) Mary Anderson and Elizabeth (later Henderson) were joint owners of Breadnut Hall in St Ann in 1834.
