James Virgo Ruthven

Biography

Eldest son of Dugald Malcolm Ruthven and his wife Mary nee Virgo. Baptised in Trelawney, 08/11/1800. His father died in Trelawney in 1814; by 1824 his mother had moved to England. Very likely the James V. Campbell age 22, white, living at Retrieve Old Works in Hanover in the census of 1823. Described as a planter when he became a Freemason of Atholl Lodge in Lucea Bay, Jamaica, 07/08/1824 at the age of 25. Inherited a quarter share in the enslaved people owned by his mother on her death in 1825. An executor of his mother, he proved her will in London in 1829. Recorded as arriving in Jamaica (probably via North America) in 1830. Nothing further has been traced of him.
