Biography
Absentee slave-owner dying in Britain c. 1771, formerly of Barbados. Probably the widow of Thomas Baxter of St Michael Barbados. a lawyer, whose will made in 1748 and proved 12/10/1749 made his wife Sarah his residuary legatee after bequests including the manumission of a 'mulatto woman' named Duchess.
- Will of Sarah Baxter widow late of the island of Barbados but now of the City of Bath [made in 1768] proved 20/04/1771. She left to her daughter Margaret Salter her dwelling house on Barbados and four named enslaved people (Ellick or Ellice, a man; Moll; Mary Rawlins and Purier Downs [?] a boy); to her son-in-law Richard Salter the land and buildings in Barbados occupied by Joseph Salmon; to her daughter Harbin Rycroft £150 and her enslaved woman named Sarah; and to her great grand-daughter Mary Salter Dehany £100. She left her residuary estate to her daughter Margaret Salter and her granddaughters Margaret Salter Dehany and Phillippa Elliot Holder.
