Biography

Daughter of Samuel and Barbary Newton. Baptism not found.

  1. Sarah Newton married Richard Bate in St Philip, Barbados, 18/12/1677. They had a daughter, Sarah, baptised in St Philip 26/04/1684.

  2. She inherited Woodland plantation in St George, and Newbold's plantation in St John, from Francis Raynes in 1680. The estate had previously been given by "conditional deed of gift" to her mother Barbara in 1662.

  3. The will of her mother, who died in 1693, gives Sarah's children as Raines, Newton, Sarah, Barbary and Isabella.

  4. Deceased by 1723 when her son William Bate of Derbyshire, England, sold the estates to George Newport of London for £5,000.

  5. Raines Bate was buried in St Michael, Barbados, 02/09/1713. William Bate Esquire was described as of Foston, Derbyshire, brother and heir at law of Raynes Bate deceased late of Foston and the Island of Barbados in 1720. William Bate brought several Chancery cases in the 1720s and 1730s.

  6. Richard Bate bought Foston Hall in Derbyshire from John Agard in 1679.
