Robert Dalzell of Wokingham

???? - 1821

Biography

Former tenant-for-life of one moiety (half) Lucky Hill in St Mary Jamaica until his sale of his interest c.1800.

  1. Will of Robert Dalzell of Wokingham, County of Berks., proved 01/09/1821. The will opens with a recitation that under the will of his father (Gibson Dalzell) dated 03/03/1755, Robert had inherited as tenant-for-life a moiety of the estate called Luckey [sic] Hill in Jamaica, with remainder to his children in whatever proportion he decided. In 1800 he and his children had agreed to sell the moiety to John Jacques, James Laing and Humphrey Ewing of Jamaica for £4500 currency (£3217 sterling): under the original trust, he divided the proceeds (which had been invested in 3% consols) between his children, with only £50 to his son and his daughter Henrietta, who was already 'amply provided for.' The Lucky Hill estate and Lucky Hill pen in St Mary were shown against 'Jacques, Laing & Co.' in 1812 and 'Jacques & Laing' in 1817.

  2. His mother was Susanna Augier, born enslaved, the daughter of John Augier but freed in her father's will c. 1722.

  3. Described as "now at Westminster School' in the will of his grandfather General Robert Dalzell (written and proved in 1758).
