Son of Hon. George Duff and his wife Frances nee Dalzell. Inherited a moiety of the Jamaican property of his maternal grandfather Gibson Dalzell on the death of his mother in 1778. By 1790 the Lucky Hill estate was owned by William Dunlop and by 1792 it was in the hands of mortgagees.

Enslaved boy on Unity Valley Pen, Jamaica. Manumitted in 1795 by David Barclay and removed to Philadelphia, with 29 other freed persons from the estate, where he was placed under the care of Society for Improving the Condition of Free Blacks.
