Edward Carleton Cumberbatch

Biography

  1. Slave-owner on Barbados, dying in Bristol in 1821. He disinherited his son, also Edward Carleton Cumberbatch (1795-1835, headmaster of Hitchin Grammar School), for marrying Mary Gertrude Ashe. His estates passed to his daughter and son-in-law Sarah and Stephen Cave.

  2. Son of Abraham Carleton, who inherited Cleland and The Farm plantations in Barbados under the will of his grandfather Abraham Cumberbatch and changed his surname to Cumberbatch. Mother was Elizabeth nee Trent. Married Sarah Howell 09/09/1794. Part owner of Nicholas and Ebworth plantations with his brother John Trent Cumberbatch.
