Biography

Awarded the compensation for Mt Tirza Pen and Whitehall in Westmoreland Jamaica with his wife, Mary Elizabeth Clarke (nee Parkinson) (q.v.) as owners-in-fee, and part of the compensation for the enslaved people on Retreat in St Ann Jamaica as trustee for the Barrett family.

  1. Son of John Graham Clarke, Newcastle-upon-Tyne industrialist and shipowner who had inherited Jamaica estates from uncle Jacob Graham (who had gone to Jamaica as a young man in 1746) in 1816, and Arabella Altham, and brother of James Graham Clarke (q.v). Mary Elizabeth, John Altham Graham Clarke's wife, was the daughter of Leonard Parkinson, slave-factor in Jamaica.

  2. In 1861 John A.G. Clarke senior aged 78 born Northumberland was living at The Manor House Frocester Gloucestershire with son (and head of household) John A.G. Clarke junior, aged 48 born Herefordshire. Death of John Altham Graham Clarke was registered Q1 1862 at Wheatenhurst Gloucestershire.

  3. There is confusion in the Alumni Oxonienses for John Altham Graham Clarke, the son of J.A.G. Clarke of Kinnersely [the man of this entry], who matriculated Brasenose 1833 and 'died in 1862.' In fact the son, John Altham Graham Clarke jun., lived until 1897, dying aged 84 and leaving £15,695: it was his father who died in 1862.
