Biography

Ann Pool Ritherdon née Johnson, the daughter of Susanna Johnson, a free woman of colour and Dugald Campbell of Jamaica (q.v), a white slave-owner; although this could conceivably be Ann Pool Ritherdon (b. 1820), the daughter of Ann Pool Johnson and George Ritherdon, an East India Company civil servant, there is no sign of trustees having been appointed for her as there would have been for Ann Pool Ritherdon (b. 1820) as a minor.

  1. Susanna Johnson, a free woman of colour now residing at Salt Spring Hanover had by an indenture of 22/07/1803 conveyed to Dugald Campbell 31 'Negro and other slaves with the increases of the females of them upon trust for my children', Mary Johnson now Smith, George Johnson, Susannah Ricketts Johnson and Ann Pool Johnson (who was given Sophie, Drusilla, Bob, Elina, Fanny, Fedelia, Bonilla & her children Mary, Mira and Kalin, Polydore and Venus). All the children were in England. Trustees for Susanna Johnson's estate and property real and personal were Dugald Campbell of Salt Spring and James Boyick of Great Queen Street in London.

  2. Ann P. Ritherdon, age 54, born Jamaica, was living at 2 Munster Terrace, Fulham, in the census of 1851 with her husband George, age 54, "Accountant + Cashier for a public institution", born Middlesex, children Neill (age 26, civil engineer, born Stockwell, Surrey), Emma (age 22, born Clapham), Julia (age 20, born Clapham), Ernest (age 14 born Middlesex, London) and Ann P. Leake (age 30, born Middlesex, London). In the same household was her 5 month old granddaughter, her sister Mary Smith, age 62, widow, "fundholder", born Jamaica, and one female sevant. By 1861 the family had moved (without Mary Smith) to 5 Lower Brunswick Terrace, Islington.

Notes identify the husband of Mary Johnson as Thomas Poole Smith of Hammersmith; Ann Pool Johnson as marrying George Ritherdon an East India Company Official in 1819 at Clerkenwell; James Boyick as Dugald Campbell's agent in London; and George Johnson as inheriting his mother's property Cave Valley. There was a Chancery suit Re. Ritherdon in July 1868 over £797 15s 4d paid to the executor of Susannah Johnson's will by George Johnson. The daughters were also each left annuities of £100 under the will of Dugald Campbell 01/11/1813, proved after his death 07/01/1818.
