Biography

Daughter of Richard Brodie and his wife Elizabeth nee Cross, was born 20/07/1793 and baptised in St Ann, Jamaica 08/12/1794. Assumed to also be the Eliza Brodie 'of London' given in the slave compensation records.

  1. Aunt of Elizabeth Turner and Louisa Brodie, and sister of Oswald Brodie [all q.v.]. She was described as of York Street Portman Square and formerly of St Ann's Jamaica in an affidavit she swore dated 28/10/1836 that her nieces Elizabeth Turner and Louisa Brodie were of age as of 11/12/1836, in connection with the compensation for 24 enslaved people on Lawrence Park in St Ann's Jamaica.

  2. An Elizabeth Brodie aunt aged 55 unmarried born Jamaica was living with John Astell D. Cox, printer, his wife Mary (aged 32) and her sons (his stepsons) James William Smith and Brodie Smith, at Ham Common in 1851.

  3. In 1861 Eliza Brodie, unmarried, born Jamaica aged 67 was head of the household at 6 Seymour Place Chelsea with sister Mary Lawrence (a widow) and several nieces, all born Jamaica. She was also registered in the 1861 census as a visitor with the Reynell family at No. 1 Sheffield Gardens, where the head [although not given as such] was Elizabeth Lawrence Reynell, aged 47, born Jamaica.

  4. In 1871 Eliza Brodie was at 2 Bradmore Park Terrace aged 77 born Jamaica again with Mary Lawrence and nieces; in 1881 she was living ('great-aunt' aged 87 born Jamaica) at Carthew Villas in Hammersmith with Evan Lawrence, aged 27 a civil servant at the War Office and two of his aunts, Frances and Florence Lawrence (who were Eliza Brodie's nieces), both born Jamaica.  

  5. The death of Elizabeth Brady Brodie was registered at Fulham Q2 1881 aged 87.
