Biography

London absentee slave-owner in Antigua, dying in 1836 aged 80.

  1. Son of Elizabeth Harvey (daughter of John Harvey of Midmar 1691-1767, and sister of Alexander, John and Robert Harvey, who went out to Grenada and Antigua in the mid 18thC) and Baillie Alexander Farquhar. Robert Harvey (1732-1791), who had bought out the contingent interest in the estates of which he (Robert Harvey) was tenant-for-life, bequeathed his property to his nephews, the half-brothers John Rae Harvey and Robert Farquhar. John Harvey (ne Rae) in turn left his share of the Grenada estates to Robert Farquhar in 1821.

  2. Robert Farquhar's daughter Eliza Mary [whose own will was proved 08/03/1851] married 16/09/1819 Sir Michael Shaw-Stewart 6th bart. (1788-1836) (q.v.).

  3. Will of Robert Farquhar of [Portland Place] St Marylebone Middx proved 23/03/1836. In the will he ratified the disposition in 1833 of his estates in Renfrewshire in Scotland and left 'all my plantations' in Antigua and his moiety of the estates lately purchased of the assignees of Daniel Henry Rucker in Grenada to be sold by his trustees for the benefit of his daughter and heir, Dame Eliza Mary Shaw-Stewart. The description of his West Indian estates in his will does not appear to reconcile fully with his awards in the compensation process, where he was compensated for three estates on Grenada as owner-in-fee and one on Antigua, but the will of John Harvey (ne Rae) discloses that he [John Harvey ne Rae] had owned his share of the estates with Daniel Henry Rucker. One of Robert Farquhar's trustees was William Robert Keith Douglas (q.v.).
