Sir Michael Shaw Stewart 6th Bart.

4th Oct 1788 - 19th Dec 1836

MP for Lanarkshire 1827-1830 and Renfrewshire 1830-1836. He married Dame Eliza Mary Shaw Stewart in 1819. She was the daughter of Robert Farquhar of Newark, Renfrew (q.v.). Eliza Stewart retained control over her father's estates in Antigua and Grenada and transmitted them to her sons in her will proved 8 March 1851.

1st son of Sir Michael Shaw Stewart (formerly Stewart Nicolson), 5th bt., of Carnock, Stirling (q.v.) and his cousin Catherine, daughter of Sir William Maxwell, 3rd bt., of Springkell, Dumfries; brother of Patrick Maxwell Stewart (q.v.).

'He inherited extensive estates in Renfrewshire, including property in the port of Greenock, along with plantations in Trinidad and Tobago, from his father in 1825.' (Jenkins) Attended meetings of the West India planters and merchants. In the House of Commons, presented a petition from the West India planters and merchants of Glasgow, Greenock, Port Glasgow and Johnstone for compensation to slave owners, 28 March 1831. At the General Election of 1832 he advocated ‘some wise and efficient scheme’ to liberate the enslaved, a position which should not be confused with being against slavery.

Identified by Judd as a 'West India' MP.

Following his death in 1836, he was succeeded by his eldest son Michael Shaw Stewart (1826-1903), who became a Liberal-Conservative Member for Renfrewshire, 1855-65.
