Frances Bladen formerly Fouch or Foche (née Jory)

In her will proved in 1747, Frances Bladen left her Nevis estate among a group of friends and relatives, allotted by dividing the then income of £300 p.a for its rental to each of six of them at £50 p.a. It appears that some or all of these legatees sold or mortgaged their entitlement to the London merchant James Buchanan and in turn a 1/3rd share was granted and assigned to Dr John Fothergill in 1763.

Archibald Buchanan as heir-at-law of James Buchanan and James Buchanan's widow Jane were parties to a deed of 1763 in an unknown capacity concerning an estate on Nevis now identified as Jory's bequeathed by Frances Bladen to a group of legatees in her will made in 1746. It is possible that James Buchanan had acquired, or lent on mortgage against, a part-share in the estate.

Dr. John Fothergill

In 1772 (1 and 2 January) John Fothergill sold Jory’s to John Boddie, but the estate was mortgaged back to him (19 and 20 February) by John Boddie to secure the purchase price. On 2 December 1780, Fothergill (after the death of Boddie) having recited a summary of his relationship with John Boddie and his role as trustee under John Boddie's will, appointed Charles Hutton on Nevis as his attorney to carry on the management of the estate for the purposes of the trust.

Either mortgagee-in-possession or owner. It is not clear whether or when she had purchased the equity of redemption, or relied on the wills of John Boddie and her brother John Fothergill.

Entered 5 April 1791, indenture between Ann Fothergill of Great Russell St, Bloomsbury Sq, Middlesex (and John Fothergill her nephew) and Cossley Saunders of Nevis. An agreement to sell to Saunders ‘Jorey’s’, 320 acres formerly the estate of Frances Bladen together with 100 slaves (schedule attached).

An agreement to sell to Saunders ‘Jorey’s’, 320 acres formerly the estate of Frances Bladen together with 100 slaves (schedule attached).

Edward Huggins Sr.

Huggins bought two estates, shown as Chax Hill and Upton, in 1799 from Cossley Saunders. David Small and Christine Eickelmann have deduced from the details of Upton that it was in the same location as the estate formerly known as Jory's transferred from John Fothergill to John Boddie in 1772. Edward Huggins' will proved in 1827 refers to his estates as including Golden Rock and Fothergills in St George Gingerland.

Notes

This estate has been traced by David Small and Christine Eickelmann, who very kindly made available their detailed findings to LBS. It does not appear in the Slave Registers or compensation records, where it was possibly subsumed in the adjacent Golden Rock estate with whom it appears to have shared its history in the early 19th century. It now forms part of the Nevisian Heritage Village at Fothergill's.

Geo III Part 16 No. 25 indenture of 08/11/1763 between (1) Archibald Buchanan of London, only son of James Buchanan late of London and Jane Buchanan widow and executrix of James Buchanan (2) James Cave of Woodford surgeon and Mary his wife heretofore Mary Hurt, widow of Christopher Jarvis Hurt, formerly Mary Hooper (3) Archibald Napier of Waltham Abbey and William Strahan printer of New Street St Brides (5) John Fothergill of London Doctor in Physick. The deed rehearsed the will of Frances Bladen dated 27/10/1746, and showed that on the death intestate of Joseph Hooper, one of the legatees of Frances Bladen, a 1/6th share in Frances Bladen's former estate on Nevis had passed to Mary Cave as sister and heir-at-law. In the marriage settlement of James Cave and Mary Hurt nee Hooper dated 1 and 2 May 1753, of which Napier and Strahan were trustees, 3/6th of the Nevis estate were assigned to them in trust to pay the rents and profits to such person as Mary Cave should direct while James and Mary jointly lived. 'Archibald Buchanan, Archibald Napier and William Strahan have granted to John Fothergill his heirs and assigns for ever one full an equal 3rd part customary share or down roof Mary Cave, for the natural life of the said Mary.'

Indenture dated 29 November 1799 Cossley Saunders sold to Edward Huggins (senr), for £22,000, two estates: Chax Hill (two parcels of land totalling 67 acres 1 r 3 p) and Upton Estate (331 acres 2 r 3 p), plus 184 enslaved people. Though the name has changed, the reported boundaries of Upton were very similar to those in the 1772 sale from Fothergill to Boddie, according to David Small and Christine Eickelmann.
