Biography

London Virginia and West India merchant, whose firm is the subject of an article by Jacob M. Price. He was succeeded briefly in the firm by his son Archibald Buchanan of Sunden. Archibald Buchanan and James Buchanan's widow Jane were parties to a deed of 1763 in an unknown capacity concerning an estate on Nevis bequeathed by Frances Bladen to group of legatees in her will made in 1746. James Buchanan's daughter inherited Sunden from her brother: she married Sir John Riddell 6th bart. Sir John Charles Buchanan Riddell 13th bart (d. 2010) was Private Secretary to Prince Charles.

Archibald Buchanan as heir-at-law of James Buchanan and James Buchanan's widow Jane were parties to a deed of 1763 in an unknown capacity concerning an estate on Nevis now identified as Jory's bequeathed by Frances Bladen to a group of legatees in her will made in 1746. It is possible that James Buchanan had acquired, or lent on mortgage against, a part-share in the estate.
