Abstract 

The President of the Family Division knows a thing or two about both ‘welfare’ and ‘law’, but his judgment in Re B (A Child: Post-Adoption Contact) [2019] EWCA Civ 29 raises in passing some tricky questions about how the two concepts fit together.
