Peter R Kellett

Honorary Professor of Practice

Biography

Peter Kellett (BSc, solicitor non-practising, MA Environmental Law) has been at the forefront of the design and implementation of environmental law in England working across the private, NGO and public sectors. Peter retired from full time roles in October 2022 after 10 years as the Environment Agency’s Director of Legal Services. 

There Peter was a member of the Executive Team and General Counsel to one of the largest environmental organisations in Europe. He led a substantial legal team on legal and many governance issues through EU Exit, major incidents, responsible investment of its Pension Fund and working with Government during austerity. Peter steered key litigation and work on the design, implementation and enforcement of environmental regulation. His work included, for example, civil sanctions implementation and the environmental permitting regime.

Peter is a former trustee and Chair of the UK Environmental Law Association (2001-11) and of St Werburghs City Farm, Bristol (2012-18). He is a Board member of the Great Western Credit Union (2021-date).  Peter is currently a member of the Law Society’s Climate Change Working Party.
