Professor William MacNeil - LLM 1988

William Macneil LLM 1988

I graduated with an LLM from UCL Laws in 1988. The rigorous training and broad education that I received from UCL Laws has made possible an academic career spanning Britain, Hong Kong, the United States, Canada and Australia. Currently, I am the inaugural holder of The Honourable John Dowd Chair in Law, and the Dean of the School of Law and Justice, Southern Cross University, Lismore, NSW and Coolangatta, Qld, Australia. Long Inspired by the outstanding tuition I had from UCL's eminent legal philosopher, Professor William Twining, my scholarly and pedagogic interests were then, and remain jurisprudence and cultural legal studies.

My last book, Novel Judgements: Legal Theory as Fiction, cites Professor Twining as a major influence and won the Penny Pether Prize for Scholarship in Law, Literature and the Humanities. I am the founding editor of the book series, ‘Edinburgh Critical Studies in Law, Literature and the Humanities’, the Head of SCU's Lismore Campus, and the Chair of the Council of Australian Law Deans.

My partner, Pam, and I look forward to welcoming UCL Law alumni to our home in iconic Byron Bay in New South Wales' idyllic North Coast!
