2 October 2023

Professors Tejendra Pherali and Alison Koslowski have been recognised in the latest Academy of Social Sciences Fellowships for their contributions to the social sciences for public benefit.

They are among six academics from across UCL who have been newly elected to the Fellowship in the Academy of Social Sciences (AcSS) in recognition of their excellence in fields including economics, peacebuilding and gender inequality, with work addressing some of the major social issues facing the UK and the world.

Pro-Provost Professor Alison Koslowski is Co-Director of Thomas Coram Research Unit at IOE, UCL's Faculty of Education and Society. Her research focuses on policies and practices that can reduce gender inequalities, promote greater work-family balance, and improve family wellbeing. This month she takes up the role of Pro-Provost (Equity & Inclusion), as the senior academic champion for UCL’s equity and inclusion work.

Tejendra Pherali is a Professor of Education, Conflict and Peace whose research with the IOE's Centre for Education and International Development focuses on interactions between education and conflict and post-conflict peacebuilding in fragile environments.

Professor Geraint Rees, UCL Vice-Provost (Research, Innovation & Global Engagement) said: “I want to commend this immensely accomplished group of academics who have been elected to the Academy of Social Sciences. Their expertise and achievements have had a tremendous impact on UCL and the wider world, and this honour reminds us of the continuing importance of the social sciences in today’s world.”

Other UCL academics who were elected to the Academy of Social Sciences include Professor Toby Seddon and Honorary Professor Bernardette Holmes, who were elected earlier this year in the AcSS's round of Spring 2023 fellowships.
