Dr Talia Isaacs, Associate Professor at IOE, UCL’s Faculty of Education and Society, has taken up her role as Co-Editor of the high impact peer-reviewed SAGE journal, Language Testing, from 1 January 2023.

Having served on the Editorial Board since 2014, Dr Isaacs joins fellow Co-Editor Professor Paula Winke (Michigan State University) to provide thought leadership and strategic direction of the journal. Currently an Associate Professor of Applied Linguistics and TESOL (Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages) at IOE, she takes over the editorial position from Professor Luke Harding (Lancaster University).

Through this appointment, Dr Isaacs joins a number of academics within the Centre for Applied Linguistics who hold major editorial roles in high-calibre academic journals. These include Professor Li Wei (Applied Linguistics Review, International Journal of Bilingual Education and Bilingualism, The Language Learning Journal), Dr Ana Pellicer-Sanchez (The Language Learning Journal), Dr Jim McKinley (System), and Dr Miguel Pérez-Milans (Language Policy).

Commenting on her appointment, Dr Isaacs said: “I am honoured to be taking on Editorship of this longstanding, distinguished, agenda-setting journal. I embrace the overtures that the journal has recently made in furthering open science, including through introducing new publication types, such as research syntheses and registered reports.

I will work with the Editorial team to advance initiatives that improve transparency and accessibility in research conduct and reporting. Alongside expertise in language testing, I bring to the role experience publishing in wide-ranging scholarly venues, having inadvertently spent my career trying to bridge disciplinary silos through trying to get my work published.

My growing experience disseminating in medical journals gives me a unique insight into publication conventions in a different field, interdisciplinary working, and partnering with different stakeholders in the educational arena and beyond. I would like to encourage forward-thinking contributions to Language Testing that appeal to the traditional readership of the journal while broadening its appeal.”

Language Testing is an international academic journal publishing original research on foreign, second, additional, and bi-/multi-/trans-lingual language testing, assessment, and evaluation. UCL’s current agreement with the journal’s publisher, SAGE, allows UCL corresponding authors to publish their work ‘gold’ open access, making their articles free and publicly available to all.
