The exhibition was held at IOE between 24 June until 1 July and celebrated some notable figures – and buildings – from IOE’s 120-year history. It also showed how key IOE scholars contributed to knowledge in the field of education and the social sciences.
The competition, ‘What’s your IOE?’, asked the IOE community to submit photos that represent what IOE means to them. One winner and one runner-up were chosen from each category: staff, students, and alumni.
The competition brought together a judging panel including IOE alumna Andria Zafirakou MBE, who is an Arts and Textiles teacher and Associate Deputy Headteacher at Alperton Community School, and 2018 Global Teacher Prize winner. The judging panel also included current student Fan Wu (Education Studies BA), who is the Undergraduate Student Representative for the Department of Education, Practice and Society, alongside faculty staff.

Staff: Ronan Haughton (IOE and UCL Education and Student Experience)
The competition judges chose this photo for its strong composition and dynamism as well as the way the film-quality of the photo and lack of obvious 21st century reference points in the frame lend a mystery and enduring quality to the IOE building. In this photo, the IOE’s home at 20 Bedford Way could have been captured at any point in its lifespan since 1975, barring estimates for the age of the tree!
Student: Jianuo (Vivian) Yang (Education Studies BA, 2023)
The judges chose this entry as a reflection of the everyday moments experienced at IOE and the emphasis on growth - perhaps personal, perhaps intellectual - when a being is nurtured as part of a community.
Alumni: Hauwa Umar Aliyu (Postgraduate Diploma in Education, Health Promotion and International Development, 2019)
The competition judges chose this photo for the way it conveys the alumna’s long-standing connection with their alma mater, as a place to visit with fondness and nostalgia.
Runners up

Staff: Dr Keri Wong (Assistant Professor in Psychology)
The judging panel chose this photo for its unusual perspective on this much-loved celebration: the photographer is among the faculty staff who assemble on stage while graduands’ names are read aloud and they are awarded their degree, while students, family and friends look back at the camera.
Student: Punika Chaiyawat (Art and Design in Education MA, 2022)
Competition judges chose this entry for its strong lines of perspective and joyful colours in the afternoon sun. An ever-popular view of the IOE building, in particular the section which houses IOE’s Newsam Library, which a great many students will be very familiar with during their studies, makes this entry an apt embodiment of the competition’s theme, ‘what’s your IOE?’.
