IOE professor joins government panel on leadership

22 July 2021

UCL Institute of Education’s (IOE) Professor Qing Gu will bring her expertise in educational leadership to the government’s new Leadership Research, Evidence and Impact Advisory Panel (REIP).

Qing Gu

Professor Gu, Director of the UCL Centre for Educational Leadership, was previously on the Research Advisory Panel for the National Leadership Centre run by the Cabinet Office. This has now been incorporated into the Government Skills and Curriculum Unit’s (GSCU) Leadership Directorate.

The GSCU Leadership Directorate works to help civil and public service leaders develop the skills, knowledge and networks they need to address the country’s most complex challenges.

Professor Gu is part of a small group of highly experienced individuals who will help guide, challenge and advise the Leadership Directorate on its research and evaluation work. She and other REIP members will advise on the Leadership Directorate’s research and evaluation strategy and support the Directorate’s ambition to employ evidence-informed innovative practices for leadership development.

As Director of the UCL Centre for Educational Leadership, Professor Gu and the Centre have significant experience in providing research-informed advice and guidance for educational leaders and policy makers. In March 2021, the Centre was appointed by the Department for Education to deliver the new National Professional Qualifications (NPQs) for teachers and school leaders from September 2021.

Professor Gu said:

“I am delighted and honoured to serve as a member of the Research, Evidence and Impact Panel (REIP). We have learned a lot about who successful leaders are and what they do to make a real difference to organisations, teams and individuals from our research in education. The experience and expertise of REIP members span a range of policy and disciplinary areas and I feel very privileged to be part of a team who will support the Directorate to strengthen an evidence-informed approach to leadership development in the public and civil services sectors.”
