The event, which began on Tuesday 2 February and comes to a close on Friday 5 February, comprises 27 thematic working groups and plenary sessions covering topics such as ‘Mathematics Education in and beyond the COVID-19 pandemic: challenges and opportunities’.

The purpose of the virtual event is setting the agenda for research papers as well as considering responses to the pandemic ahead of the face-to-face CERME conference that will take place in Italy in 2022.

Professor Jeremy Hodgen and Dr Eirini Geraniou, who are Chair and Co-Chair of the International Program Committee for CERME12, organised the event and several IOE academics led thematic working groups.

Dr Alison Clark-Wilson led a working group on Teaching Mathematics with Technology and Other Resources, Piers Saunders co-led on the theme of Algorithmics, and Dr Beth Kelly co-led the working group on Adult Mathematics Education.

Professor Nathalie Sinclair (Simon Fraser University) delivered a lecture on ‘The technology (re)turn in mathematics education’.

Professor Hodgen said: “We are delighted to host the Virtual Congress of the European Society for Research in Mathematics Education here at the IOE. CERME provides a unique opportunity for the international mathematics education research community to communicate, cooperate and collaborate. This is particularly important in the face of the challenges for mathematics teaching and learning presented by the pandemic.”
