IOE hosts meeting on ‘powerful knowledge’

30 March 2020

UCL Institute of Education (IOE) has hosted a meeting of the Knowledge and Quality across School Subjects and Teacher Education (KOSS) Network.

The KOSS Network explores two key ideas in education: 'powerful knowledge', which is understood as the knowledge that is most valuable for young people to learn, and 'epistemic quality' which is the quality of the subject-related knowledge used by teachers and students in classrooms.

During the event, the participating researchers shared their expertise in developing aspects of powerful knowledge and epistemic quality. They also explored how these ideas could be transformed from specialists’ understanding in order to promote effective learning.

The KOSS Network comprises collaborators from the IOE’s Subject Specialism Research Group; Karlstad University, Sweden; and Helsinki University, Finland. By working together, the network can examine theoretical, empirical and methodological issues in new contexts and develop perspectives further together.

The KOSS Network plans to carry out empirical studies across school subjects to capture how the nature of powerful knowledge and epistemic quality in different school subjects can be characterised in the curriculum.
