Professor Mitchel Resnick, Director of the Lifelong Kindergarten research group at MIT Media Lab, Massachusetts Institute of Technology, launches the series with his online lecture on 'Sowing the seeds for a more creative society'.
The world is changing more rapidly than ever before. Today’s children will confront a never-ending stream of unknown, uncertain, and unpredictable situations throughout their lives. Their success and happiness will depend upon their ability to think and act creatively.
But there is a problem. Most of today’s educational systems and technologies are not designed to foster creative thinking.
This lecture will consider technologies and strategies for engaging all young people, from all backgrounds, in creative learning experiences, by expanding opportunities for them to work on projects, based on their passions, in collaboration with peers, in a playful spirit.
It will focus especially on examples from the Scratch programming language and online community, developed by Professor Resnick’s research group at the MIT Media Lab.

About The Richard Noss Lectures
This annual lecture series recognises the work and vision of Professor Richard Noss, founding director of the UCL Knowledge Lab, based at the UCL Institute of Education.
Richard’s ambition was to bring together the best researchers from across the world to explore how we live and learn with technology to solve societal challenges. Today, the Lab remains a crucible for the study of technology in learning and teaching and for the design of digital artefacts that change the way people think and construct knowledge.
The series will be delivered by influential figures on a theme of their choice connected to learning in its broadest sense, but with one constraint: a focus, as for the Lab and its parent university, UCL, on tackling the world’s biggest problems.

Professor Mitchel Resnick develops new technologies, activities, and communities to engage young people in creative learning experiences. His Lifelong Kindergarten research group developed the Scratch programming software and online community, used by millions of young people around the world.
He also co-founded the Computer Clubhouse project, an international network of 100 after-school learning centres for youth from low-income communities. He is author of Lifelong Kindergarten: Cultivating Creativity through Projects, Passion, Peers, and Play.
