Barriers to Learning in Mathematics

Taught in one afternoon session, we will be looking at some of the barriers to learning that have a significant impact on the learning of maths. We will discuss some assessments and interventions that may help identify and support students who are struggling with maths.

Who this course is for

Kindly note that this short course has been cancelled. This course is suitable for primary teachers, secondary maths teachers, SENDCo’s and support staff.

Course content

The course will consider:

• some of the reasons why children may find maths difficult
• the role of working memory
• the nature of ‘dyscalculia’ and how it might be manifested in the maths classroom
• the role of fingers in supporting number work in the classroom.

The course will involve a range of activities and discussion to support the understanding of the range of needs that exist in the maths classroom.

Learning outcomes

The aims of the course are to enable staff to identify the issues that make maths learning difficult for some children and explore some possible strategies that may help:

• know some of the reasons why students may find maths particularly challenging
• understand the role of working memory when doing maths
• understand the role of fingers in the development of early number concepts
• have a better understanding of the nature of dyscalculia.

Course structure

The course is taught over one afternoon session and will be workshop-based with some input and some opportunity for practical activities.

It will also involve some tasks in the workplace.

There are no formal entry requirements for this course.

You will receive a certificate of attendance for completing the course.

Course Team

Dr Caroline Hilton

Caroline has worked in primary and secondary schools, special schools and PRUs. Caroline is currently a Lecturer in Education at UCL Institute of Education and is responsible for the mathematics module on the Primary PGCE programme.

Caroline has a particular interest in the barriers to learning in mathematics and in exploring cross-curricular approaches to the teaching and learning of maths.
