IAS Laughter: Jewish Comedy - a serious history

Jewish comedy, as Jeremy Dauber says in his recent book, is serious business. We welcome him to the Institute of Advanced Studies to discuss precisely what Jewish comedy is, how it developed, and how its various strands connect with the Jewish story.

Bio
Jeremy Dauber is the Atran Professor of Yiddish Language, Literature and Culture and, for a decade, directed the Institute of Israel and Jewish Studies at Columbia University, where also teaches in the American studies program. He is the author of Antonio's Devils: Writers of the Jewish Enlightenment and the Birth of Modern Hebrew and Yiddish Literature(Stanford University Press, 2004); In the Demon's Bedroom: Yiddish Literature and the Early Modern (Yale University Press; 2010); The Worlds of Sholem Aleichem (Schocken Books, 2013), and, with Joel Berkowitz, Landmark Yiddish Plays (2006). For twelve years, he co-edited Prooftexts: A Journal of Jewish Literary History with Barbara Mann. His newest book, Jewish Comedy: A Serious History, was published by W.W. Norton in 2017. Both The Worlds of Sholem Aleichem and Jewish Comedy were finalists for the National Jewish Book Award.
