We’re living through hysterical times. History, once again, is repeating as farce, and woe betide whoever fails, especially online, to be witty. If the crying-laughing emoji is the trademark of the internet age, “satire is dead” is its accompanying motto. But if the key to good comedy is a great sense of timing, then who exactly is laughing now? Who gets to make and who has to take a joke? Feauring jokesters from Franz Kafka to Marina Hyde, Sigmund Freud to Hannah Gadsby, Soren Kierkegaard to Donald Trump, this talk will examine the relationship between politics, history, psychology and joking.
This keynote talk is part of the conference 'On Laughter'. Please download the full programme here.
