Sustainability

Applied Blockchain

We aim to promote the practical applications of blockchains and provides customised solutions for blockchain companies, as well as academic and financial institutions to address issues in sustainable finance, climate change, and health threats. With high-level academic research and collaboration with industry players, we investigate the potential solutions to add economic and social value to the society.

Projects

  1. Plastic Credit: we develop new ways to design-out waste from plastic packaging and create new business opportunities integrated with blockchain-based plastic credit, which incentivises the market towards a more reusable, recyclable, or compostable direction. See the UCL Plastic Waste Innovation Hub for more information.
  2. Electric Vehicles (EV) Charging & Discharging in Smart Grids: using EVs to manage the overall power fluctuation in the smart grid based on a blockchain-based P2P electricity trading. This aims to promote a more sustainable energy system.

Finance in transition

This strand of research is focused on transition periods induced by substantial exogenous shocks such as natural or man-made disasters, questioning the foundations of the status quo. With respect to the so-called megatrends like climate change, ageing, health threats, and the ICT revolution, our main interest lays in the field of long/medium term sustainability and resilience. In particular, we investigate the role of Private Capital in easing or preventing a smooth transition. At the same time, we look inside the Private Capital sector to assess its attitude and dynamics to adapt to the changing conditions.

Projects

  1. Performance and resilience of venture capital investments in transition periods and after exogenous shocks
  2. Investment strategy in digital transition, how DeFi will change the investment paradigms
  3. Deep learning methodology for risk analysis in private equity investment decision
