London: All-Cause Mortality

In London, there were 485,677 deaths from all causes over the study period (2000 - 2008).  This figure consists of 237,624 male deaths and 248,053 female deaths and is based on data from the Office for National Statistics (ONS).

Neighbourhoods with an excess of all-cause male and female mortality occur in the inner city and East London.  Neighbourhoods with high deficits of all-cause mortality are concentrated in the North and North-West of London.  These patterns closely match the geographical distribution of the city according to socio-economic characteristics, where social deprivation and excess mortality go hand in hand.  Excess all-cause mortality of men is particularly clustered in inner London; while East London has a particularly high excess of female mortality.  Areas with the highest excess of all-cause mortality in London are those with high concentrations of ethnic minorities.
