Helsinki: Socio-Economic Indicators

Each of the following maps demonstrates the heterogeneous nature of neighbourhoods in Helsinki in terms of socio-economic characteristics.  These maps highlight explicit patterns of geographical segregation.  The geographical distribution of social deprivation in Helsinki, measured by socio-economic indicators of unemployment, low educational attainment and university qualifications, produce different patterns throughout the city.  Nonetheless, the Eastern-most areas of Helsinki are found to be the most deprived according to the characteristics shown in these maps.  Socio-economic indicators were derived using 2001 Register data from Statistics Finland.

The following socio-economic indicator maps are colour-coded; high concentrations of a socio-economic characteristic are represented by brown tones, which lighten as the concentration reduces.  Intermediate concentrations of a socio-economic characteristic are represented by the white tone.  The lowest concentrations are presented by green tones.  Sparsely populated areas were excluded from the analysis, and are shown in stripes.   For further information about how these maps were created, please visit the methodological section of the Atlas.  Click on each image for a full-screen view of the maps below.

Unemployment

Area Distribution of Unemployment in Helsinki

This map shows that unemployment levels vary significantly throughout Helsinki.  Areas ranked in the lowest septile of unemployment (shown in dark green) are found in the outermost parts of the city, bordering the sea in the South and in the far North of Helsinki.  Brown areas representing high unemployment are particularly clustered in the Eastern-most areas of Helsinki.  Moving from the East to the centre of the city and elsewhere, the level of unemployment becomes more heterogeneous.  In most parts of the city, it is commonplace for areas marked by low levels of unemployment to reside next to areas burdened by high unemployment.

Primary Education

Area Distribution of Adults with Low Educational Attainment in Helskinki

This map shows the area distribution of adults that completed formal schooling at the primary level.  As expected, these patterns coincide with those shown for unemployment.  As in the map of unemployment, the Eastern-most areas of Helsinki are also ranked in the highest septile of low educational attainment.  Areas least affected by low educational attainment (shown in dark green) are primarily located in the West and in the South-Western islands.  Intermediate levels of low educational attainment (shown in white) become apparent in the centre of Helsinki.  Otherwise, the geographical distribution of low educational attainment is varied throughout Helsinki.

University Qualifications

Area Distribution of Adults with University Qualifications in Helsinki

This map ranks areas of Helsinki according to the proportion of adults that have obtained university qualifications, and as expected, it shows the inverse of the patterns shown in the map of low educational attainment above.  The Eastern-most areas of Helsinki are those with the lowest proportions of university qualifications.  Moving from the East to the centre of Helsinki and elsewhere, low-intermediate levels of university qualifications (shown in light green) become apparent.  Areas of Helsinki in the two highest septiles (shown in browns) are found mainly in the West and in the South-Western islands.
