Amsterdam: All-Cause Mortality

In Amsterdam, there were 87,793 deaths from all causes over the study period (1996 - 2008).  This figure consists of 40,335 male deaths and 47,458 female deaths and is based on data from the Centraal Bureau voor de Statistiek (Statistics Netherlands).

Excess risk of mortality is highest in the city centre of Amsterdam for both sexes.  In addition, there is a high concentration of excess female deaths on the South-Eastern bloc of the city, namely the Holendrecht en Reigersbos neighbourhood located on the Western edge of Amsterdam.  Areas with a deficit in all-cause male and female mortality are those located in the South-Western region of the city, specifically the Osdorp-west, Niew Sloten and Zuidas en Buitenveldert neighbourhoods.  A similar deficit in mortality risk is shown in areas east of the city centre, where the Buikslotermeer en Nieuwendam-Noord, Watergraafsmeer-Nord and Indische buurt neighbourhoods reside.
