Parental leave abbreviations and definitions

A glossary of some useful abbreviations and definitions in relation to parental leave.

Adoption Leave

A period of up to 52 weeks away from work for the main carer of a baby or child who has been adopted.

Curtailment

Mother/main carer for adoption notifies employer that they wish to end maternity/adoption leave early.

EWC

Expected week of childbirth.

KIT Days

Keeping in Touch Days during maternity or adoption leave.

MA

Maternity Allowance – a payment made by the government if you are not entitled to receive SMP but meet other eligibility criteria.

MATB1

Form issued by midwife to confirm EWC after 20th week of pregnancy.           

Maternity Leave

A period of up to 52 weeks away from work for a woman who has had or is due to have a baby.

OAP

Occupational Adoption Pay.

OMP

Occupational Maternity Pay.

OPL

Ordinary Parental Leave.

OPP

Occupational Paternity Pay.

OShPP

Occupational Shared Parental Pay.

Parental Leave

Up to 18 weeks unpaid leave away from work to care for a child, which can be requested by anyone who meets the eligibility criteria. Normally a maximum of 4 weeks can be taken in any one year.

Paternity/Partner Leave

A period of up to 4 weeks away from work at UCL

  • for the male or female partner of a woman who has had a baby, to support her and the child, or
  • for the partner of the main carer who has adopted a baby/child, to support the main carer and the child.

Qualifying Period

Is the eight weeks up to the 15th week before the baby’s due date.

QW

Qualifying Week. For maternity pay, this is the week before the 15th week before EWC, i.e. when a woman is approximately 25 weeks pregnant

SAP

Statutory Adoption Pay – provided by the State, paid by the employer and administered through HM Revenue & Customs (HMRC).

ShPP

Shared Parental Pay.          

SMP

Statutory Maternity Pay – provided by the State, paid by the employer and administered through HM Revenue & Customs (HMRC).

SMP1

Form to be completed to claim Maternity Allowance.

ShPL

Shared Parental Leave.

SPLiT Days

SPL in Touch Days.

SPP

Statutory Paternity Pay – provided by the State, paid by the employer and administered through HM Revenue & Customs (HMRC).

SShPP

Statutory Shared Parental Pay.

Surrogacy

A surrogacy arrangement or surrogacy agreement is the carrying of a pregnancy for intended parents/carers.
