Honorary clinical contracts

How to arrange an honorary clinical contract.

Consultant clinical academic contracts

It is a requirement for all consultant clinical academic staff, to hold an honorary clinical contract with an NHS Trust, PHE or a local clinical provider.

Applications for the honorary clinical contract should be made at the same time as the substantive contract application.  The honorary clinical contract will be interdependent to the substantive contract but should be open ended in line with the substantive contract.

The pre-employment check requirements differ slightly from Trust to Trust but information on requirements is listed at the top of each Trusts form.  The forms for UCLH, GOSH and RF can be found on the right hand side of this screen.  For any other Trusts please contact the Trust direct for their current form.

For most contract applications the requirements are the same:

  • Passport (verified)
  • RTW     (if applicable)
  • Proof of address (x 2)
  • DBS    (date and level clearance and DBS reference number)
  • OH    (date and level of clearance)

However some NHS Trusts (GOSH in particular) require slightly more in depth checks (including Safeguarding Level 3 and Resus training)

Most of our partner Trusts have now agreed to take our DBS details and OH details.

The forms for the OH and DBS referral can be found on the link to the right of this page

A copy of the honorary contract should be sent to HR Services to be filed on EDRM.

For further guidance on making these applications please contact the HRBP Clinical.

Junior clinical staff contracts

Junior clinical staff who will carry out a clinical component of work whilst employed at UCL will normally require either an honorary clinical contract, or a research passport.   It is the responsibility of the junior doctor to arrange an honorary contract or research passport but they will usually need input from their local UCL HR manager in completing this process.  It will be the decision of the Trust as to whether to issue a contract or research passport.

The pre-employment check requirements differ slightly from trust to trust but information on requirements is listed at the top of each Trusts form.

If a junior doctor wishes to apply for either an honorary contract or research passport, please signpost them to their NHS contact as the Trust is responsible for organizing these.
