Senior academic promotion 2023-24

26 October 2023

Applications for senior promotions open from Tuesday 31 October and will close on 12 December 2023. Familiarise yourself with the process and Academic Careers Framework, which outlines the promotions criteria, before deciding whether to apply.

The Portico

The opportunity to progress and apply for academic promotion remains a crucial aspect of academic careers at UCL and we are delighted to announce the launch of the 2023-2024 academic promotions round. As in previous years applications should be made against the published criteria in the academic careers framework.

As in previous years candidates are also asked to select referees who can offer an objective review of their contribution. It is recommended that academic references are from professors wherever possible. Further guidance on references is in paragraphs 30-32.  This year there is the normal six week window for applications. As in previous years we wish to avoid any unintended barriers within the promotions process itself and staff who require any reasonable adjustments are asked to get in touch as soon as possible.

Candidates are also asked to select referees who can offer an objective review of their contribution. It is recommended that academic references are from professors wherever possible. Where applicants have two posts we ask that they ensure both HoDs are kept involved in the process.

We also want to draw your attention to the professorial banding process for 2024, which is another important element of academic careers. The application process for professorial banding will launch early in the New Year with cases being considered at the same stage as senior promotions cases (around May-July). This is part of the harmonisation of practices and timescales announced as part of the recent reward strategy changes.
