Below is a collection of presentations from funders, panel members and awardees. These presentations contain tips and advice on how to apply to particular funders and schemes, from writing proposals to attending interviews.

Wellcome

Wellcome exists to improve health for everyone by helping great ideas to thrive.

They are a global charitable foundation, both politically and financially independent, supporting biomedical research through basic and clinical science, the humanities and social sciences, and public engagement grants and Fellowships. 

Presentations:

The UCL Population and Lifelong Health Domain Early Career Network hosted representatives from Wellcome's Science Team at their Fellowships and Funding event in January 2019. They presentated an overview of the wealth of funding opportunties and advice on how to write a successful application.  


In March 2017, representatives from Wellcome visited UCL to highlight the wealth of funding opportunities available to population health researchers at UCL. In addition to an update on the direction of travel for population health at Wellcome and an overview of all their relevant schemes, attendees heard about the rocky road to success and lessons learned from researchers with Wellcome Trust funding.


In May 2015, James Harden (Clinical Activities Manager, Wellcome Trust) presented on Clinical Fellowships at the Academic Clinical Fellows (ACF) meeting. 


In 2015 eLife ran a number of webinars for postdoctoral fellowship schemes. 

Dr Victoria Male (UCL Division of Infection & Immunity) was invited to discuss her Sir Henry Dale Fellow and answer questions.

Biotechnology and Biological Sciences Research Council (BBSRC)

UCL held a BBSRC funder workshop in June 2016. 

Presentations were given from Peter Burlinson, Rosie Peacock and Rosie Timbrell (BBSRC), and Professor Kate Jeffery (recipient of BBSRC and MRC funding and BBSRC review panel member).

European Research Council (ERC)

The European Research Council funds outstanding individual researchers who wish to pursue frontier research in any field. UCL ran information events on Starting (StG) and Consolidator (CoG) Grants prior to the 2016 ERC calls.

MQ: Transforming Mental Health

MQ: Transforming Mental Health is a charity that supports research into mental health across the disciplines of basic bench research, clinical studies, and the social sciences.

NC3Rs

The NC3Rs is a UK-based scientific organisation dedicated to replacing, refining and reducing the use of animals in research and testing. The principles of the 3Rs act as a framework for humane animal research. The NC3Rs fund research through grants, early career awards and open innovation platforms to commercialise of 3Rs technologies.

National Institute for Health Research

The NIHR held a webinar in April 2018 about consolidation of its fellowship and personal award provision into the Academic Career Development Fellowships scheme, which will formally launch in October 2018

Medical Research Council

The Medical Research Council (MRC) is responsible for co-coordinating and funding medical research in the United Kingdom. A representative from MRC presented at a workshop at UCL in November 2018: "How to prepare a successful Fellowship application in the Cardiovascular Field".
