Doctoral Students are Investigating Sustainable Cities Topics

UCL Grand Challenges and the UCL Doctoral School recently offered awards of £2,000 to pairs of doctoral students from different faculties.

Applications had to demonstrate how the students would work together on a Grand Challenges topic, in any of a wide range of activities, from research workshops and symposia, through to films and publications, and public engagement in all its forms.

Two awards were made to students covering Grand Challenge of Sustainable Cities topics:

  • Earthquake Preparedness First Aid Kit:
    A Video Series

    Chen Huang (Department of Civil, Environmental and Geomatic Engineering) and Omar Velazquez (Institute for Risk & Disaster Reduction)
  • In Otto Koeniger's footsteps:
    Workshops to encourage engagement between HEIs and cities for Government of India's Smart Cities Mission Initiative

    Debananda Misra (Department of Education, Practice and Society, Institute of Education) and Rodrigo Caimanque Leverone (Development Planning Unit)

Work will begin in August 2017, and should be complete by 31 July 2018.
